Alternative music-where it has been, and where it's going
Alternative music embodies a different musical approach and a "anything other than" philosophy to the status quo in the rock and roll. This movement in music have existed in other forms over the years. Punk, was for example arguably a precursor of what later developed as alternative music. The basic idea of Punk Rock was to be antiestablishment. Punk deliberately produced a different sound than Rock at the time, using different chords, more distortion, more feedback and a real irreverent in your face approach at once prevailed in rock and roll, but has long since disappeared Rock became mainstream. When jordfald in mainstream and complacency begins, a movement inevitably occurs that says "I am tired of this ... we need something new, anything other than what we have now". And just as the new music begins.
Yes, the term "Alternative Music" pretty much what it sounds like: a different sound to it, you hear in mainstream rock and roll. Now try to define mainstream rock and roll a bit like trying to lick the bottom inside of a beer bottle. Just think of the music you hear on your local classic rock type radio station, and it is basically mainstream rock and roll music.Bands such as REM probably came on the music scene as an alternative, as their sound and attitude was a break from the classic rock "behemoths" of bands such as Boston, Kansas and other bands in this epoch, which is not named after cities or States. the early 90 's saw also a plethora of alternative bands such as Seattle biggies Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains.
College radio has proved to be a breeding ground for discovering new music.Professional music radio stations are saddled with the burden of playback of popular music to remain popular with listeners and advertisers so that they can continue making bazillions of dollars in advertising revenues. College radio does not have this burden, so music selections can come from a more liberal selection, and not just the most recent Maroon 5 hit. Bands such as REM have expressed their appreciation of College radio, as it gave them and alternative music, a considerable boost.
The idea of alternative music is music and bands, not there in the mainstream. Wellllll what happens when a band is becoming so popular that it is MAINSTREAM? Ahh, the classic dilemma.The debates rage on among the fan boys everywhere: "I liked X band when before they were popular," and so on. REM that great and original as they are, were gradually a mainstream band from their very life.This is not to say each band that become mainstream suffer a decline.I just like to point out that alternative music in its essence is different than music, which is widely accepted, aka POP.
The genre of alternative music is currently difficult to define. the wave that began in the early 1990s has placed and has left behind a mass of carbon copies in its aftermath. the only thing to do now is to wait for the next big wave in music to come and give us once again what can only be described as "Alternative Music".

Effective laws to Protect music must be adopted with the same
Our laws fail clearly the people who create the music for a living. I have recently learned that a friend's music is offered on dozens of sites around the world for free without his permission. In this case, my friend followed all the appropriate measures to protect his music through the u.s. Copyright Office, but the current legislation in THE UNITED STATES and abroad does not provide adequate protection against piracy. There are noble intentions within the laws designed to protect intellectual property, but there is no appropriate treatment or means to really prevent or discourage piracy. In short, the current legislation does not turn on.
While the Digital Millennium Copyright Act appears to support the owner's rights, limits the liability of internet service providers too, which offers the possibility to distribute pirated materials. Although not I am a lawyer, it is clear to me that the responsibility is 100% on the owners to pursue each infringement. For each infringement, the owner may issue a cease and previous letter, but must file a lawsuit within 14 days for each site or violator is allowed to put the material back up.In reality, there are so many offenders, it is impossible to close them all the time, an illegal digital file is distributed online. I know that the debate continues and new laws are being discussed, but time is running out for the vast majority of artists, there are implications and without sufficient resources to protect themselves.
In the meantime seems people becoming increasingly indifferent to the consequences of this phenomenon has on the lives of innocent people dependent on their music for survival. It is actually very same indifference, looters feel when the plate glass Windows in a shop smashed to pieces during the riots. Finally, I hope that most people are aware of the value of music in our lives.If not, perhaps you could imagine what life would be like without music in our lives. it must of course be very difficult, because no one seems to have the capacity or the time or motivation to imagine such a thing.The idea that music is free, however, is not sustainable over any appreciable length of time.How long will the artists continues to produce music, if there is no advantage or recognition for their time and their art?It is not surprising that children now do not understand the concept of music costs money.To them it is like to turn on the faucet in the kitchen, apart from their parents pay for the water every month I sincerely believe in time will do something, but the time to act is now.
We need effective international laws that will punish anyone in the chain of distribution in direct proportion to the level of crime. For example, I know that I have downloaded some files from P2P sites. Although not I am proud to have been a part of this mess, I proudly offer to return the money tenfold to a fund that would benefit those who worked to create this music. rather than normal prison time, however, I recommend that we put more serious offenders to work in the camps to repay their debts by the same sweat and effort were given away in equivalent dollars at the expense of artists; I can hear the websites shut down by the prospect of marketing violators during criminal jurisdiction.

The 20 things you should know about music online
I was recently in a Panel on a music industry event here in Birmingham. The topic was ' Is this the best time ever to be in the music industry? '. Of course, there was some debate. My brief was to come up with some simple tips to cope-and thrive--in the music industry in these ' best times '. So I drew up a list of bullets to discuss.
I originally aimed at a top 10 list--but more things than to understand if you want to make any progress with music company online. I made a top 20.
In no particular order (but numbered so you know where you're up to):
1. don't believe hype: Sandi Thom, Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen has not super famous, rich and successful because of MySpace, nor because they drew a crowd of thousands miraculously for their homemade webcast. PR, traditional media, record labels and money was all parties involved.
2. Consult/like/purchases: It is the golden rule. People hear music, so they like music, so they buy music.It is the only order, it can happen in. If you are trying to do it on any other sequence, it just doesn't work.
3. the opinion Leaders rule: we know the importance of radio and the press. There are now new opinion leaders who want to tell your story with credibility.You must find out who they are--or better yet, become one of them.
4. Customize: A tailor-made solution to at best, or at least a tailor-made kitset approach to your Web presence is crucial.An off-the-shelf number will almost guarantee your anonymity.
5. the Long Tail: Chris Anderson has pretty much proved that the future of retail selling less of more. Bring everything online.Expand your catalog. you want to make more money selling a large number of niche products than you want to sell a few hits.
6. Web 2.0: don't forget to become a destination--becomes an environment. Let your customers brand and sort your catalog. Open up for user-generated content. Your site is not a brochure – it is a place where people gather and connect with you and with each other.
7. connect: Learn how to tell a story, and learn how you can see it in an appropriate manner to Web communications. Consider how that could be translated into both new media and mainstream PR outlets.
8. Cross-promotion: your online thing is not a replacement for your offline stuff, and also does not exist it independently of the. figure out how to do the two truly intersect.

13. SEO: you must understand how Search Engine optimization works and how you can maximize your chances of being found.Be both easier to find--and searchable.
14. Authorization: This is very basic things. do not spam.Let people opt-in makes the information you send them relevant, useful and welcome.Long lists of dates and events are impersonal and desire to work. personalised messages seems far more important.
15. RSS: Allows it, use it and learn it. relying on people to come back to visit your site is ultimately soul destroying.So they always becomes more content all the time.
